CARPFM member companies adher to strict manufacturing guildeines to ensure and promote product safety. These guidelines include:
- Utillizing fresh raw material, fit for human consumption.
- Ensuring that all raw materials are handled, stored and transported in refrigerated trucks.
- Ensuring that the finished raw product is frozen rapidly.
- Ensuring that the finished raw product is handled, stored and transported in refrigerated trucks.
- Maintaining sanitation procedures in their production facility.
Despite the fact that Canada's food supply is among the safest in the world, sometimes the food we eat can carry pathogens. Under the right conditions, an invisible enemy “bacteria” may be present on foods.
Scientists have learned these important facts about bacteria:
- Bacteria are an integral part of our environment. They are found on all raw agricultural products. Some can play a beneficial role, while others can be harmful.
- Harmful bacteria can be transferred from food to people, people to food, or from one food to another. If possible, we recommend that you use separate storage and preparation surfaces for raw animal food products.
- Bacteria can grow at room temperature. Keep product refrigerated until ready to feed.
- Growth of harmful bacteria in food may be slowed or stopped by refrigerating or freezing. Thawing portions required, on a daily basis, keeps the multiplication of bacteria to a minimum. Avoid keeping thawed product for more than 2-3 days.
SAFE HANDLING
Commonsense must prevail when handling raw meat. You do this all the time when you prepare a meal for the family. After handling raw meat for your pets, wash your hands before eating your own food. Sterilize any knives, surfaces or utensils used in the preparation or handling of your pets’ food. We recommend using a stainless steel dish, which is washed thoroughly with soap and hot water after every meal. Discard any uneaten food and store raw pet food in such a way it does not contaminate human food. After thawing the food, we recommend it is only kept in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. |
